2012 Civic/School Boards Election

OCTOBER 24, 2012 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

An Election for Mayor, Councillors (Wards 1 - 6, and 8) and In-City Board Members for the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division No. 119 and Prince Albert Roman Catholic Separate School Division No. 6 of Saskatchewan, are being held on October 24, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at various polling places in the City.
ELECTION GUIDE
Please watch for the Election Guide which will be delivered to your home the week of October 7th, 2012. This Guide will contain important voter information, such as Qualifications of Voters, List of Candidates, Special Provisions, and the Polling Area Map to determine where you vote. The polling areas and places may have changed, so please review the Guide carefully.
ADVANCE POLL
In addition to Election Day, voters can access the Advance Poll if you are physically disabled; have been appointed as an election official; or anticipate being unable to vote on the day of election.
The Advance Poll will take place at City Hall Foyer, 1084 Central Avenue on the following dates:
 Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.;  Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.;
 Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.;
 Friday, October 19, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; and  Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Mail-in Ballot and Mobile Poll options are also available by contacting the Returning Office.
VOTER IDENTIFICATION
Voters must provide valid ID at the polls this election. Government issued photo identification is your best option. Other forms of ID are allowed, but two pieces of ID must be provided, as long as both contain your name and at least one contains your address. Examples of acceptable ID with your name could be your Health, Credit or Debit Card, and ID with your name and address could include your current water, tax, power, cable or phone bill.
Several alternative forms of ID are allowed and voters are encouraged to check out the 2012 Elections website at www.citypa.ca, watch for posters, or contact the Returning Officer.

Prince Albert Ski Team (PAST) will be having a registration

Greetings from Catholic Family Services!  We are pleased to provide you with a copy of the Fall 2012 edition of our news. The newsletter contains important information regarding our Family Life Education Programs, our staff and the date for our Annual Charity Banquet.

At Catholic Family Services we are fortunate to have a very professional and dedicated staff.  This includes our counseling staff, our administrative staff, program coordinator, building staff, BRIDGES Staff  and the many individuals who facilitate the Family Life Education Programs.  My sincerest thanks to all of them and the Board of Directors for the important role they play in the life of our agency.

RIDING THE WAVE:   FOR CHILDREN (AGES 6-13) & FAMILIES EXPOSED TO INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE

This 6 week program aims to reduce the effects of violence by providing a safe, supportive environment to:

1)Assist children to process and understand the violence and abuse they have witnessed or e experienced

2)Help them understand that all types of abuse and violence are unacceptable and involve a choice for which

     the abuser must take responsibility

3)Learn skills to a)boost their self-esteem; b)manage anger; c) problem solve effectively; and            

      d)express feelings appropriately.

Parenting Component: Parents are expected to attend the parental group, which runs simultaneously with

the childrens.  The sessions will help parents to:

1)Understand the effects of violence and abuse on their children

2)Understand the resulting behaviors of their children

3)Help their children practice and use the skills at home that they have learned

4)Learn some parenting skills to meet their own needs.

This program is funded by Sask. Justice.  No registration fee. 

Parents and children are required to attend an interview to determine eligibility for enrolment.

CLIMBING THE ROCK:

FOR TEENS EXPOSED TO INTERPERSONAL VIOLENCE

Climbing the Rock is an 8 week youth-friendly teen program that uses behavioral and skills oriented strategies to help young people overcome the personal struggles they encounter after being exposed to any form of interpersonal violence. At its core, the program is interventionist in nature; however several themes of prevention appear throughout the curriculum. The program uses a variety of weekly activities that are designed to improve self-esteem, help young people make positive life choices, avoid unhealthy situations, and reduce personal and environmental risk factors that may lead to further exposure to violence. Assisting in the achievement of these endeavors is one-on-one casework between the coordinator and participants as well as mentoring with positive volunteer-based role models. Group sessions held once a week for 8 weeks ensure that participants learn and have fun at the same time. This program is funded by Sask. Justice.  No registration fee.

TAMING THE TIGER

The goal of this  6 week program is to provide children (ages 6-13) and their parents with a safe, supportive

environment in which to learn how to deal with anger.  Participants will learn the fundamentals of anger, how they react physically and emotionally when angry, and strategies to work through their anger in healthy ways.  The parenting component provides parents with effective techniques to deal with aggressive behavior.

This program is funded by Sask. Justice.  No registration fee.

CALMING THE STORM

Are you one of those people who feel a lot of anger?  Are you often at a loss as how to deal with it?  This program will help you cope with your anger by helping you to identify the sources of your anger; by assisting you to acknowledge the importance of these feelings; and by offering strategies for coping with anger so it does not

dominate your life.  The class will offer participants safe and effective ways to express and manage anger.  The six sessions allow time for group sharing and practicing of techniques.  This program is partially funded by the Prince Albert & Area Community Foundation and Sask. Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation and Our Lady of the Prairie Foundation.

ACTIVE PARENTING

Do you ever wonder if there is a better way to handle those daily parenting problems? You can become more successful at parenting! This workshop uses videos and group discussion to help you raise responsible, cooperative children. We demonstrate effective ways to use non-violent discipline techniques, improve communication with your children, stimulate independence as your child grows older and encourage your children to be their very best.   This program is partially funded by the Prince Albert & Area Community Foundation.

LOCATION:  St. John Community School, 1453 – 7^th St. E.

BANANA SPLITS

This is a group for children (ages 6-9 and 10-12) to help them heal from separation and divorce.  It offers a mix of play and art therapy , along with games and storytelling, to help them understand divorce, express their feelings, and learn coping strategies.

TIME:  4:00-5:00 p.m.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

This is an 8-week program for women who have witnessed or experienced interpersonal violence. The program focuses on building self-confidence and self –esteem in women who have been involved in abusive relationships and empowers them to make healthy relationship choices. Participants will develop a safety plan and learn to avoid the cycle of violence.   This program is partially funded by Our Lady of the Prairie Foundation.

Register one week before program starting date as classes are filled on a first come - first serve basis.

Payment is required to confirm registration

      We reserve the right to cancel or postpone programs due to low registrations.  A full refund will be issued.

If the participant cancels less than one week prior to class a $10.00 fee will be retained.

If applicable, check with your Employee Assistance Program as registration fees are sometimes covered. 

All of these educational sessions involve sharing and discussion.  If you are looking for personal counseling, please contact a counselor.  For people who have criminal charges pending or are awaiting    sentencing, participation in program(s) does not replace personal counseling or therapeutic treatment.  

Letters indicating proof of attendance will not  be issued.

COUNSELING SERVICES

Catholic Family Services offers confidential therapeutic counseling services to families, couples, individuals and children in the following areas:

Marital and Premarital--Conflict Resolution--Family Violence--Depression--Grief/Loss Addictions--Separation/Divorce--Eating Disorders--Self Esteem
Personal and/or Job Stress--Enrichment--Personal Growth--Parenting issues

l Fees for counseling are based on a sliding scale and income level. No one is denied service as a result of their economic situation.  However, all clients are encouraged to pay a fee for the service.  The amount of payment is discussed with the counselor and the client.

l Counseling is available to all regardless of their race, religion or age.

l Counseling services are also available to various organizations and businesses through  Employee and Family Assistance Programs.  The EFAP Program is a confidential information counseling and referral service which is designed to ensure privacy and rights of all employees. 

MEET THE STAFF

Chris Letkeman:  Chris has a M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy,  is an Clinical Member of the

American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) and is registered as a Marriage and Family Therapist.  His approach to counseling is using Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Systems Theory. 

Leah Barber:  Leah has a Masters in Counseling and B.A. in Behavioral Science. She is registered with the Canadian Professional Counseling Association of Social Work.  She has experience in individual and group therapy, crisis counseling, anger management and youth and family counseling.  Her counseling strategies include narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and solution focused therapy. 

Marlene Smart:  Marlene has a M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy and is currently pursuing her certification as a Sex Addiction Therapist.  She is an Associate Member of the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT).  She will be working directly with the students from the Prince Albert Roman Catholic School Division.  Marlene has a background in music and uses this skill both therapeutically and for personal enjoyment.  Other personal interests are family life, reading, writing, piano, composing, and the outdoors.

Keri Okanik:  Keri has a Masters in Social Work and B.A. in Social Work from McMaster University. She is working  directly with the students from the Prince Albert Roman Catholic School Division.  She also works as the Community Consultation Coordinator for Setting the Stage, an initiative to improve access to Victim Against Women services.

Danielle McFadyen  - Danielle has a Masters of Counselling Psychology through Athabasca University as well as a Bachelors of Art Degree with a major in Psychology and Sociology through the Universality of Regina. Although she is still experimenting with different theoretical models of counselling the ones she is most drawn to include Narrative Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  Danielle is a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

 

John Kreiser:    John is a registered Social worker who has worked in the Addictions and Mental Health field for over 30 years.  He has also taught at SIAST in the Addictions Counseling Program.  He is certified in “Applied Choice Theory” and “Re-decision Therapy”.  His interests include reading, canoeing, most sports and spending time outdoors.

Rose Rothenburger:  Rose is the Program Co-coordinator with Catholic Family Services.  She coordinates the delivery of Family Education Programs offered through CFS, working with community organizations and schools to ensure their needs are met.

BRIDGES  - An Employment Initiative Program focuses on assisting individuals to make a successful transition from the Provincial Correctional System into the         community with the objective of securing employment.

 Raine Dalrymple:  Raine is the program manager for the BRIDGES Program.  In addition to assuming overall responsibility for the program Raine also facilitates many of the program modules as well as works one on one with the students.  Raine has a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from Algoma University and has graduated as an addictions counselor from CDI College. 

 Rick Martin:  Rick is the job readiness coach for the BRIDGES Program.  He identifies and establishes work placements, matches students with potential work sites, directs and supervises the students during their placements and ensures all the tools are in place for a successful experience for employer and  employee.
